[Book Review] Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Rating: 3/5
Learning Level: 2/5
Genre: Novel
Book Review: I first heard of this title from a movie trailer. People said it's good. But I decided to hold back until I read the book. At the time, all I know was that it has an Indian boy and it has a tiger. Now that I read the book, I know that there are a lot more.

"Life is Pi" is a story of a boy lost in the sea. He spent a long time on a life boat with a tiger. At first, he has to stay alive, not to be eaten by the tiger. Interestingly, he found out later that the tiger is his greatest companion. They keep each other busy when floating in the mist of empty sea. There is also a little twist at the end.

Reading this book, I learn quite a bit about animals as well as religion. Sound boring? No, not at all. The narration is quite intriguing. I wasn't feel bored for most of the time.

The audiobook version is narrated by Jeff Woodman. He made a great Indian accent. This is quite interesting since then main character, Pi, is an Indian boy. I find the narration in this book very vivid. While reading this book, I can see the picture of the boy, the tiger, and what they do clearly in my head. Overall, I enjoy reading this book. I recommend this book for most readers.

Takeaways:

Animals and Territory

Animals are all about territory. They feel insecure when getting into a new territories. They feel in power when someone enter theirs. In a circus, a man needs to enter a ring before the lion. He uses a whip to make sound. He encourages audience for cheering and applause. He does all these before a lion enter the ring so that he would be in power while the lion would feel insecure.

Purpose of Religion

Here are the purpose of three main religion
  • Hindu is all about 'Brahman', a massive entity. They do everything to go back to be with Brahman. Some may even torture themselves so that the soul doesn't want to be in the current body.
  • Christian is all about 'Love'. They focus on loving others.
  • Islam is all about 'Brotherhood'. So, if someone harms their family, they would fight back.
All three religions are good. It's up to the people who interpret the religion. This is sad, because if the interpreter who speaks for the religion is good, the followers will be good. But if the interpreter is bad, the followers will be bad too.

Quotes

"... the most dangerous animals in the zoo is man."
"Whatever the reason for wanting to escape, sane or insane, zoo detractors should realize that animals don’t escape  to somewhere  but  from something . Something within their territory has frightened them–the intrusion of an enemy, the assault of a dominant animal, a startling noise–and set off a flight reaction."
"if there is one thing an animal hates above all else, it is the unknown. Escaping animals usually hide in the very first place they find that gives them a sense of security, and they are dangerous only to those who happen to get between them and their reckoned safe spot."
"People move because of the wear and tear of anxiety. Because of the gnawing feeling that no matter how hard they work their efforts will yield nothing, that what they build up in one year will be torn down in one day by others."
"To lose a brother is to lose someone with whom you can share the experience of growing old, who is supposed to bring you a sister-in-law and nieces and nephews, creatures to people the tree of your life and give it new branches. To lose your father is to lose the one whose guidance and help you seek, who supports you like a tree trunk supports its branches. To lose your mother, well, that is like losing the sun above you."

Book or Audiobooks?

Personally, I prefer audiobooks. It's fun, and I can listen when I'm doing something else. It also makes other activities (e.g., jogging) a lot more fun. For more detail about audiobooks, please read [this post].
There is one more reason that may encourage you to go for the audiobook version. You can get it now for FREE. Audible offers you a free trial for 14 days. Even if you get the book and cancel the subscription right away (so that you don't have to pay), you can keep the book. And, don't worry if you lost the audiobook file. Just log into audible.com. You can keep downloading the over and over again.

About the summary: It takes time to finish up a book. And, when you do, sometimes, you want to review what you learn from the book. If you do not make  notes as you read, you might have to go through the book once again. This can be time-consuming when you are dealing with a book. But you can still flip through the book and locate what you are looking for.

However, when the material is an audiobook, it is extremely hard to locate a specific part of content. Most likely you will have to listen to the entire audiobook once again.

This book summary will help solve the pain of having to go through the book all over again.

I am leaving out the details of the books. Most books have interesting examples and case studies, not included here. Reading the original book would be much more entertaining and enlightening. If you like the summary, you may want to get the original from the source below.
