Inbound Marketing: Blogsphere

Blog is a virtual place in the Internet where people publish short articles. It works like magazines where articles get outdated pretty soon. People who read blogs expect this. So you need to create new content quite frequently.

Email Subscription and RSS

Writing blog, obviously you would expect people to visit you blog frequently. But, if you think about it, it’s your content, not the place where you hold the content, that you should care about. Don’t be worried if people do not come back to your site, Your blog should be a tool that lets people consume your content easily, not a leach that pulls people back. At the minimum, you should have two following tools, which let your audience as soon as you have a new post:

  • Email subscription: This is a feature which emails your blog update to the subscribed audience.
  • RSS (Really Simple Syndication): This is a technology which pushes ‘new’ contents to people who subscribe to the ‘feed’. Your audience will use a tool called RSS reader (e.g., Google Reader) to consume your content without coming back to your site. 

Get the Audience

Based on how Google works, you should optimize your site’s relevance and authority. For relevance, make sure that your title, anchor texts, and contents contain terms people are looking for. For authority, you should try to get your site posted on other sites. It would be even better if your site is posted on high authority sites like Reddit, Digg, etc. At the beginning, you may send a link to your remarkable content to others. But this only works temporarily. Do not be obsessed with posting a link to your site elsewhere. Create remarkable contents, and people will create the links for you.
But, Google is as good as bringing people to your site. But, people won’t click through if your title is not interesting. Some people might read your content from RSS reader, twitter, etc. They won’t read on unless your title is interesting. Use numbers, famous people, and famous company (e.g., 10 Steve Jobs secrets to make Apple a great company) to make catchy title.
Posts with more comments are more interesting. Encourage your audience to leave comments. Make it clear in your blog. Do not turn on comment moderation, as it will discourage people to leave comment. You might get bad comments. But bad comments are better than no comment. Plus, bad comments allow you to improve upon yourself.

Be a Good Audience

You need content to create content. Subscribe to famous blogs and read regularly. From time to time, leave insightful comments. You want the author to know and appreciate your comments. The author may even mention or post a link to your blog, if your comment is of interest to the readers.

Best Practice for Blogs

  • Use your own domain. You don’t wanna build reputation for companies like Blogger or Wordpress. You want to do it for yourself. Get your own domain. It’s not that expensive.
  • Be consistent. If your blog is professional, do not include your personal interest.
  • Do not write a long blog. One page should be fine.
  • Read other blogs to get new ideas for contents.
  • Invite specialists or professors as guest bloggers
  • Write a blog once a week at the minimum.
  • Do not oversell your products in your blog. Keep creating good contents, and let people connect the dots themselves. They will buy from you in the end.
  • Do not give up. Making your blog popular is very difficult. It takes time and effort. But keep trying. You’ll get there. 
  • Example contents are how-to, analysis to current trends and challenge, announcement of upcoming events, feedback on articles you read and print publication, links to other articles, add your own insights to what you read on other blogs, or disagree with other bloggers.
  • Use various format including texts, pictures, videos, podcasts, and cartoons.

    Book or Audiobooks?

              Personally, I prefer audiobooks. It's fun, and I can listen when I'm doing something else. It also makes other activities (e.g., jogging) a lot more fun. For more detail about audiobooks, please read [this post].
              There is one more reason that may encourage you to go for the audiobook version. You can get it now for FREE. Audible offers you a free trial for 14 days. Even if you get the book and cancel the subscription right away (so that you don't have to pay), you can keep the book. And, don't worry if you lost the audiobook file. Just log into audible.com. You can keep downloading the over and over again.

        About the summary: It takes time to finish up a book. And, when you do, sometimes, you want to review what you learn from the book. If you do not make  notes as you read, you might have to go through the book once again. This can be time-consuming when you are dealing with a book. But you can still flip through the book and locate what you are looking for.

    However, when the material is an audiobook, it is extremely hard to locate a specific part of content. Most likely you will have to listen to the entire audiobook once again.

    This book summary will help solve the pain of having to go through the book all over again.
